Category Archives: Complete List of Modern and Traditional Birthstones by Month

Where Do the Birthstones Come From?

The concept of birthstone has come from Exodus 28 of the bible, where Moses creates a breastplate for Aaron that's made of 12 stones. Each of these stones denoted the 12 months and the 12 tribes of Israel.

Eventually, as time passed, the origin of the birthstone got multiple theories and dates. As per the Gemological Institute of America, birthstones were introduced in the 1560s, while popular mineralogist George Frederick Kunz believed it was introduced in 1700 in Poland.

It was not until the early 1910's that birthstones were finally listed by Jewellers of America as per public time and interest. To be particular, it was 1912 when the standardized list of birthstones by the month was introduced.
